Free players aka free agents play a mayor role in Football Manager 2017. Top 10 Free Defensive Midfielders are without a club and are contract free which means that you can get them without any transfer fee, this is great news for any team without transfer budget, especially lower league clubs.

Free agents are a great way to further deepen your squad without the cost of paying massive transfer fees. They will come handy to lower league clubs or even top tier ones. The only fee you'll have to pay for them is the sign-up bonus, but this also won't be the case when signing most of these players.

I've searched for the best ones in each position respectably, from goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders to strikers. In addition to my top 10 list, I've included a downloadable shortlist containing over 50 free players for each position. This way if you can't sign a player from the top 10 list just download the shortlist file and add it to your game to see all other top free players for that position.

Criteria I've used to make mine top 10 free players list is the following; a player mustn't have a contract at the start of the game, players current ability mustn't be lower than 100, a player has to be natural at his position meaning a score of 20 for that position. I've included their age, nationality, do they qualify for EU or not, and first team player rating.

You will have 500 free players if you decide to download all the shortlist files. Don't worry if your game shows you less than this, as I started mine with all the possible leagues and players.
