Time for us to take a look at who are the best bargain buys for Championship sides, but to make the search more interesting, we’ll be looking only at players who cost less than £1 million.Ever since Wolves captured one of the best Football Manager 2017 wonderkids, Ruben Neves, from Portuguese side Porto for a reported fee of £15.8 million it got me thinking of other players that would fit perfectly to any Championship side but would cost you far less money.
To get to the bottom of this, I asked the Football Manager community through our social channels; “Who would be the perfect signings for English second tier clubs, but have to cost under £1 million?”.
Sure enough, the community responded with a bunch of players that could fire you promotion push even if you have a limited transfer budget.
So no matter what the game’s football betting system might say of the predicted finishing positions odds of the club you’ve chosen to lead in your 2nd tier quest, with these 11 bargain players your chances of grabbing that promotion significantly rises.
Some of these players can make an immediate impact whilst others might be a signing for the future.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at which 11 bargain players you should be signing to push for promotion.
Matthew Knox - Striker (Centre) - Livingston - Estimated Cost - £35k
The hottest Scottish football prospect and youngest player to debut for Livingston back in 2015 is your ideal striker to sign if you’re looking towards the future, either in owning a decent striker or looking to earn some serious money from selling him. His attributes don’t seem all that imposing at the start of the game but bear in mind that Matthew has some developing ahead of him as he is only 16-years-old.
Stephen Mallan - Midfielder (Centre) - St. Mirren - Estimated Cost - £45k
I see Stephen Mallan as an ideal central midfield advanced playmaker for Championship clubs. Mallan's value is at £100K, but realistically you can obtain his services for a measly £45K at the start of FM 2017. But be sure to act quickly as the likes of Brentford, Leeds United and Rangers are interested in transfer as well.
John McGinn - Midfield (Center) / DM/AM (C) – Hibernian –Estimated Cost - £251k
The young Scottish international is yet another ideal signing if you’re missing depth in the midfield. John McGinn’s versatility in the midfield means he can equally adapt to playing as a roaming playmaker in the defensive midfield position, a box to box midfielder in central midfield or as a shadow striker in attacking midfield position. Interest in the player is not high, so you should have no trouble of signing the Scott for a fee of £251k at the start.
Jason Cummings – Striker (Centre) / AM (C) – Hibernian – Estimated Cost - £277k
Jason Cummings made his transfer to Championship side Nottingham Forest in this transfer window, but at the start of the game, he is available for an estimated cost of £277k. Cummings is only 20-years-old at the start but can provide your team cover or even a starter option. One you should keep a close eye on.
David Wheater – Defender (Centre) – Bolton – Estimated Cost - £175k
Wheater swept the board in the player-of-the-year awards, winning the PFA Fans’ League One player-of-the-season prize and named in the PFA League One Team of the Year, in addition to his club’s player and players’ player prizes. And in Football manager 2017 you can obtain Wheater’s services for a bargain price of £175k. Be sure to sign the towering defender ASAP.
Barrie McKay – Attacking Midfielder (Right/Center) / AM (L) – Rangers – Cost - £1m
Barrie McKay has just made the cut on this list, as his estimated cost is roughly £1 million. But if you wait for a season the Scott could be yours for a much lower fee, given that the likes of Fulham and Wolves don’t sign him before that. Current international and only 21-year-old, Barrie is a great addition if you are missing depth down on the wings or in a central position in the attacking third.
Eoghan O'Connell – Defender (Centre) – Walsall – Estimated Cost – £386k
The Irish centre-back is on the Celtic’s development list, and in the first season he plays on loan at Walsall, this means you won’t be able to sign him in the opening season, but for a fee of £386k, you might try your luck with the Scottish side. Only 20-years-old, Eoghan O’Connell will only develop further and get better before he reaches his peak.
Tony Gallacher – Wing Back (Left) – Falkirk – Estimated Cost - £65k
Here’s a little-hidden gem in the game. Tony Gallacher develops significantly in the future and becomes one of the best wing-backs in Football Manager 2017. Given he is only 16-year-old; you should look to give him enough first-team opportunities and proper training for the young Scott to develop. A bargain price of £65k makes this player a must buy.
Jermaine Beckford – Striker (Centre) – Preston – Estimated Cost - £140k -£250k
The experienced ex Jamaican international Jermaine Beckford could be an ideal solution if you are looking to strengthen your attack further. At the age of 32, Beckford could serve for another season or two, enough to get you in that promotion race.
Ismahil Akinade – Striker (Centre) – Bohemians - Estimated Cost - £155k
Ismahil Akinade is a player with a growing reputation among football fans in Ireland. Akinade is one of the top earners at Bohemian and has recently signed a new deal which will keep him at Dalymount Park until November 2017. Akinade joined current club Bohemian FC in June 2015 and has currently made 35 league appearances and scored 13 goals for the club. Solid Target Man striker if you are playing two up-front.
Sander Svendsen – Striker (Centre) – Molde – Estimated Cost - £600k
The Norwegian international, Sander Svendsen, is a player with a growing reputation among football fans in Norway. Sander Svendsen has spent his entire career at Molde FK, making a total of 37 league appearances and scoring 11 goals since joining in December 2015. It is worth keeping an eye on this Football Manager 2017 wonderkid striker.
