This Football Manager guide will show you how to get a generated son by the game. It's not easy, but well worth it if you want your legacy to live on.
Just when you think you've had enough of Football Manager, a young lad in your club's youth-academy appears, and what do you know, it's your very own regen son.
And just like that, like any good parent, you want to give your offspring the very best. And with that maternal instinct pushing you forward, you end up playing the save you were about to quit another 20 years into the game.
Clubs take roughly 15 players per youth intake, so the chances of getting your very own FM son are slim, only 1 in 10,000 per newgen. But in the words of Lloyd Christmas from Dumb and Dumber, "So you're telling me there's a chance.".
Guide on how to get a son
If you follow this easy guide, you could fight the odds in your favour. It's worth mentioning that we tried this method on the standard edition of Football Manager only and not on FM touch or mobile.
There are three simple tricks to imply in your FM save to unlock this incredible easter-egg.
1. You need to be 34 years old or older in-game
You must be 34 years old or even older in your current FM save. Unfortunately, if you're younger than this, you'll have to wait for your manager to get older in the game.
In earlier versions, you needed to manage one club for ten consecutive years. This is no longer important in the newer versions of the game; you only need to be 34 or older.
Be sure your manager is 34 years old or older. |
2. Play until you get to youth intake day
Play the game until you reach this date, and be sure to save the game one day before the youth-intake day; this is also important.
Newgens (regens) are generated on the youth intake days, which come at random dates since Football Manager 2014, which added more realism to the game. All the clubs from the same nation have the same youth intake dates.
Be sure to save the game on youth intake day. |

3. Save and Load
Now, clubs take roughly 15 players on youth intake day, so the chances of getting your very own son are slim, as mentioned before, 1 in 10,000. The only way to try and beat this is to save and reload at the youth intake day.
Reflecting the odds, it will undoubtedly take numerous hours to stumble upon your virtual offspring finally. Lucky ones will get a son in 5, 6 reloads. There's no precise number of reloads you'll have to perform.
This will test your patience, but ultimately it will be worth it once you've got a newgen in the youth team and who carries your name and has you in his favourite personnel column as a father figure.
FM Touch and FM Mobile
If you're playing FM on tablet and PC devices, Football Manager Touch offers a unique ‘Son Generated’ DLC. By activating it, you’ll bypass the randomisation as mentioned earlier and automatically gain a son for the team you’re currently managing.
There are two ways of unlocking this feature: you can either pay the minimal sum of £1.49 (2,29€) to apply it in-game, or you can opt for one of your signed players to amass 10 years' service at your club before retiring.
