Do you want a new and exciting challenge for your next Football Manager save? The City Group challenge might just be the right fit for you!
Well then, I have a challenge for you called “The City Group Challenge.” In this Football Manager challenge, the aim is to get from one of the least known City Group-owned clubs and earn your way up into the big leagues!
In other words, you will have to be at your very best and start with no coaching badges or any experience as a footballer and work your way up through the “City Group” from the bottom to the top.
Football Manager City Group Challenge
The point of the challenge is to learn about other leagues and how they play football because we all know the English and Spanish rules, but Uruguay, USA, and Australia may have different ones.
If you so wish you could aim to go through every “City Group” owned clubs (in the game) and prove yourself on the way up to the luxurious Manchester City job.
The City Football Group own several football clubs, this includes;
- Manchester City (England) – The flagship club of the group and its most well-known member.
- New York City FC (USA) – Competes in the American MLS league.
- Melbourne City FC (Australia) – Competes in the Australian A-League.
- Yokohama F. Marinos (Japan) – Partnership with local investors in Japan’s J1 League.
- Montevideo City Torque (Uruguay) – A club in Uruguay’s first division, formerly known as Club Atlético Torque.
- Girona FC (Spain) – Competes in La Liga, with partial ownership alongside Pere Guardiola.
- Mumbai City FC (India) – A club in the Indian Super League (ISL).
- Lommel SK (Belgium) – A Belgian club competing in the second division.
- Troyes AC (France) – A club in France's Ligue 2.
- Sichuan Jiuniu FC (China) – Competes in the Chinese second division.
- Palermo FC (Italy) – A club competing in Italy’s Serie B.
- Esporte Clube Bahia (Brazil) – The latest addition, competing in Brazil’s Serie A.
Currently, in the base game five of the seven clubs are in the game, however with the option to download a database containing the Japanese and Chinese second division it would be possible to have all of the clubs!
I currently am doing this challenge myself, and I loaded up several leagues, all which contained a “City Group” owned club (England, USA, Australia, Spain, and Uruguay) and decided to start at Melbourne City.
I chose Melbourne because the rules for the Australian league are very interesting, you can only have five foreign players, and there is a salary cap of £31,500.
My aim for myself is to make Melbourne City the best team in Asia/Australasia by winning the league and competing for the Asian Champions League to cement ourselves.
My next ambition is to take over either New York City FC or Girona and make them great and compete on the level of Manchester City-style players, but that takes time, of which do you have?
Now you may think “oh they’re all owned by the owners of Man City and have a wad of money,” however this is not the case.
At the start of my save Melbourne City were predicted to finish 5th, proving they are not profiting from the money spent elsewhere.
Who knows you could become the greatest manager for each club and could have five stadiums named after yourself, IMAGINE that!
Now obviously I could tell you don’t go to Manchester City straight away, but preference is always up to you, you may not be a fan of managing in leagues you’ve never done before, but as mention prior it is a great experience, besides I have hints on players you can consider for the future.
Player targets for Melbourne City FC
The first Player I would consider for my Melbourne City save is Dalian Maatsen; I signed him on a free transfer and for that what do you get?
Dalian is a Dutch player who formally played for Vendsyssel FF, and he is an excellent right-back option who can also play at centre-back if trained.
His physicals are not bad either with twelves and thirteens across the board. The media class him as a centre-back, however being right-footed and having solid pace, I prefer him in that right-back position.
The next player I would consider signing is Dominik Kotarski; this young Croatian is definite if I were you doing this challenge with the lesser-known teams.
Kotarski is an eighteen-year-old goalkeeper who I signed for a low price of two hundred thousand pounds from Ajax and from the stats he shows, he will be a decent goalkeeper in the future.
Currently having fifteen in handling and fourteen in decisions, I don’t know about you, but that has quality written all over, but be careful he does not get poached from parent club Manchester City!
The Idea
So how did I come up with this challenge? My friend and I were talking about challenges we have partaken in previously, and he said to me he is going to do the Red Bull only challenge.
If you have not heard of it before, I will write it up in another post, but the gist is that you only go to clubs owned by or sponsored by Red Bull.
This got me thinking what if I do a “City Group” challenge, so I pitched it to him and he felt it was a great idea and so here I am, doing this challenge for myself and showing it for all of you to consider.
