Borussia Dortmund tactic and team guide for Football Manager 2021. Club
vision, tactic, key players, youth prospects and transfers in FM21.
Here is a brief Football Manager 2021 analysis of the Borussia Dortmund squad, tactics, their club structure, relationship any potential managers will have with the board, expectations and possible tactics any FM manager can use.
About the club
Borussia Dortmund are a professional football club that ply their trade in the Bundesliga. The club was founded in 1909 by football players based out of Dortmund. They are the 2nd largest sports club in Germany and are supported globally.
Board Expectations
Dortmund came runners up in the Bundesliga in the 2019-2020 season. The requirements of the board should you take over will be;
1. Make the top 4 of the Bundesliga (Automatic Qualification into the UCL)
2. Reach the semi-final of the DFB Pokal.
3. Make the knockout stages of the UEFA Champion’s League.
Additionally, you will be asked to do plenty of other things but mainly play an attacking, entertaining brand of football and sign young players to match the club philosophy.
Dortmund have excellent training facilities and one of the best youth systems in-game. You will learn to heavily depend on these to meet the club expectations and to compete for titles.
Squad, Formation and Tactical Style
Dortmund are a very attack-minded team and the board requirement is that you play attacking football. A Vertical Tiki Taka tactic should best suit the squad of players and should cater to the board’s needs. You can use a fluid counter-attacking style in tough away games.
A 4-2-3-1 is probably the best-suited formation to the available squad of players. This also helps them maintain the width and pull defenders wide and use the superior dribbling skills of your wingers to create chances.
A rough example of what your line-up would look like in a 4-2-3-1 formation is as follows;
Roman Burki as a sweeper keeper.
Mats Hummels & Manuel Akanji as your 2 Ball Playing central defenders.
Thomas Meunier & Rafael Guerreiro as the 2 fullbacks. Guerrero can be played as a wingback too. They’re attack-minded in general and should be given instructions to push forward as much as possible.
Emre Can & Axel Witsel as the 2 central midfielders. The former to be played as a box to box midfielder and the latter as a deep playmaker with defend duty.
Julian Brandt & Jadon Sancho as the 2 wide attacking midfielders who can also be deployed as inside forwards.
Marco Reus as the central attacking midfielder in a Shadow Striker role or attacking midfielder role.
Erling Haaland as a lone forward in an Advanced forward role.
Alternatively, you can go with a 4-3-3 formation if you wish to be a little defensive. There are also players like Thorgan Hazard, Thomas Delaney who are just as good as the players starting and it is just really a case of managerial preference.
Key Players ⭐
1. Marco Reus
2. Erling Haaland
Although just 20, Erling Haaland is already one of the biggest stars in European football. He is prolific in front of goal and has hit the ground running at Dortmund having scored 19 league goals in just 21 appearances.
3. Jadon Sancho
Sancho is one of the best young wingers in-game. His dribbling and physical attributes are extraordinary and the winger will only get better with age.
4. Mats Hummels
Weaknesses
2. You run the risk of some talents being poached by other clubs especially in search of higher wages.
3. This is a very young squad and the inexperience will show in big matches.
Best Youth Prospects 👶🏻
There are a few exciting young prospects in the ranks who have the potential to be some of the best players in the league. A few examples are,
1. Jude Bellingham
Bellingham is just 17 and has the stats to make a decent backup for most Bundesliga sides already. Under the right manager, he will go on to become a monstrous player and will be valued very highly.
2. Giovanni Reyna
Similar to Pulisic, Giovanni Reyna is said to be the next big star from the US who plays for Dortmund. He can already be a decent backup for most Bundesliga sides and will only get better with time.
3. Nmadi Collins
