About Porto
Porto are also the most successful Portuguese club in European competitions having won 7 trophies including 2 UCL titles. Portugal are also the defending champions of the Primeira Liga having won their 29th league title in the 2019-2020 season.
Board Requirements
Porto are in the Champion’s League, the board requirements, once you take over, will be,
1. Win the Portuguese Primeira Liga
2. Qualify for the knockout rounds of the Champion’s League.
3. Win the PT cup.
Given that Porto are one of the top dogs in the Portuguese league, the board requirements are obviously pretty high. The board expects the manager taking over to defend the league title, win the PT cup and qualify for the knockout stages of the UCL.
Porto have one of the best youth recruitment’s in the game and produce world-class player season after season. They have also very good youth and training facilities that help players reach their potential.
Squad, Formation and Tactical Style
There are quite a few tactical setups you could deploy with Porto, however, the best-suited ones will be Tiki Taka. This should provide the high tempo attacking football that the board demands and could make use of all the fine attacking talent at your disposal. However, against quality attacks or tough away games, one could go with a fluid counter attack tactic.
A 4-2-3-1 is the most stable formation for Porto. It will help you accommodate their stars in their preferred positions and also their attacking style of football.
A rough example of what your line-up would look like in a 4-2-3-1 formation is as follows,
Agustin Marchesin as a sweeper keeper.
Wilson Manafa & Ivan Marcano as wing-backs, Manafa is naturally attacking by nature and should be asked to bomb forward whenever possible.
Malang Sarr & Pepe will make up the centre back pairing and both can be played as Ball playing defenders considering that they’re comfortable on the ball.
Mateus Uribe to be played as a deep playmaker on defence duty & Marko Grujic to be played as a box to box midfielder.
Otavio Da Silva as an Attacking Midfielder will pop up with some crucial goals in important matches
Felipe Anderson on the left-wing as an Inside Forward & Jesus Corona on the right as an inverted winger.
Moussa Marega as a deep-lying or a pressing forward.
2. Felipe Anderson
3. Jesus Corona
The Mexican international is considered as one of the best players at the club. He is ambipedal and has is extremely versatile. His trickery and pace from the wings will be crucial in securing important results.
4. Pepe
Although 37, Pepe is still one of the most important players for Porto. His experience is vital in organizing the defence and he can be an excellent mentor to the young players that come from the youth setup.
Weaknesses
1. The quality of attacking options is limited and goals will be hard to come by.
2. Despite producing world-class youngsters Porto have a reputation for being a feeder club and there is always the risk of players being poached by bigger clubs from Europe.
3. The overall quality of the back-ups may not be up to the club’s standards.
Youth Prospects
There are a few exciting young prospects in the ranks who have the potential to be some of the best players in the league. A few examples are,
1. Romario Baro
2. Evanilson
3. Tomas Esteves
Currently, on loan at Reading, several European clubs are already keeping tabs on the young right back. He is one of the best young players in his position in the game and can go on to become a leading right-back for most clubs.
