The classic ‘Fallen Giant’ is always fun, but who are some of the biggest
names down on their luck that you could manage in Football Manager
2022.
The Fallen Giants of Football Manager 2022
CFC Genoa
Under new US ownership and with a few Euros to throw around, take over the giants of a region and build a superclub. It will take years, it will take effort, and you will have to trade smart whilst dealing with ambitious ownership. in terms of a challenge, though? Genoa presents the ideal way to have some fun.
Few clubs in Europe have the kind of historical cache that Genoa can call upon. However, this is Football Manager 2022 – the reality is that Genoa have fought relegation, and indeed been relegated, in recent times. They are a club with a fantastic history, but no real means of showing that history off in their current guise.
It will take you many seasons to build a genuine contender, so expect to lose stars before they settle in to this amazing city. As far challenges go, though, Genoa are something worthwhile.
Sunderland
Shambolic decision making, short-termism, and a lack of focus beyond the next week has left Sunderland in a disastrous state. Getting out of League One might seem easy enough, but you are under immediate pressure to turn a bad squad into a winning one. Then, you will be expected to reach Premier League football again in quick-snap time.
The challenge is massive, but so is the club. Like Newcastle, Sunderland is an area where everyone supports the local team – it is a massive club with a giant support. Build something here, and you could have a team that could legitimately fight it out at the top-to-middle of the Premier League.
With a fantastical support about all you can count on, though, this is going to be a major challenge for any Football Manager 2022 player.
Deportivo La Coruna
Start slow and build up a team that can escape the crazy lower divisions of Spain, where the difference between top and bottom can be very small indeed. Build a team despite having pennies to play with, and put together a side that can get the fans filling up this famous old stadium once again.
The challenge is huge, but so is the potential. Depor are a club with a genuine history and one that has been at the top of the domestic game before. Restoring them to their former glory is going to be a massive challenge – but it is one that you can absolutely achieve with some effort.
Werder Bremen
Getting them out of the second tier should be easy enough, but it is then building a stable side that can compete for Europe. You need to overcome Dortmund and Bayern, but also the likes of Bayer Leverkusen, Wolfsburg, RB Leipzig, Borussia Monchengladbach, and Stuttgart. That is a long list of teams with arguably more resources than you to pull from.
Throw in other ambitious Bundesliga sides like Hertha Berlin, and you are looking at a very long-term project. You might get the time to build something here, though, so it is a worthwhile save for those looking for something in the top five leagues with proper risk and reward.
