The English third tier is a league full of fallen giants like Sunderland, Portsmouth and Wigan competing against up and coming teams rising up the footballing pyramid, teams like Accrington Stanley and AFC Wimbledon.

This list will give you some ideas of teams that you can manage to move up the English footballing pyramid in Football Manager 2022.

Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday are one of seven former Premier League teams in League One. The glory days of Benito Carbone, Mark Bright and Paolo Di Canio are long gone. Now more than two decades have passed since Wednesday have played in England’s top flight and they were relegated from the Championship last season.

Wednesday should be fighting for promotion back to the Championship this season. Leading the side with his experience is midfielder Barry Bannan. In defence, the likes of Dominic Iorfa and Liam Palmer provide good quality. Up front, there is a new signing Lee Gregory. Finally, and maybe most intriguingly, are you the manager to be able to get former FM wonderkid Saido Berahino scoring goals?

Ipswich Town

Another fallen giant is Ipswich Town. Ipswich were one of England’s best teams in the early 80’s winning the FA Cup and UEFA Cup under the leadership of the great Bobby Robson. However, things have been much tougher in recent years. Now, in their third season in League One. Ipswich are in a rut and, to make matters worse, local rivals Norwich are back in the Premier League. Can you bring the Tractor Boys back to their heyday?

Macauley Bonne is a lethal forward who should bang in the goals in League One. Former Man City youngster Bersant Celina is a creative influence in midfield. The Kosovan international is on loan at Portman Road for the season.

Crewe Alexandra

Crewe have produced highly talented young players for years including the likes of Danny Murphy, Dean Ashton, and David Platt. Quite incredibly Crewe have been able to play lineups filled with only academy graduates. A great challenge onFM22 would be to use this heritage of only fielding players that have come through the system in order to get Crewe back up the leagues.

The Railwaymen are battling relegation from League One but there are some decent players in the squad. Midfielder Oliver Finney is the heart of the team. He is partnered in midfield by club captain Luke Murphy.

Plymouth Argyle

Britain's most southerly professional football club, Plymouth Argyle have been a yo-yo club for a long time having bounced between League One and League Two in the past decade. The Devon side’s local rivals are Exeter but also there is a rivalry with both Bristol City and Bristol Rovers.

Argyle boast a good squad that should be able to compete well in League One. Luke Jephcott is a young talented goalscorer who looks like he could play at a higher level. Scottish striker Ryan Hardie also provides plenty of goals while Dan Scarr is a very strong option at the back.

The city of Plymouth is the largest English city never to have hosted top-flight football. Are you the manager to get The Pilgrims to the Promised Land?

Morecambe

Recently promoted Morecambe are, along with AFC Wimbledon, the only teams in the top four levels of the English game never to have been relegated in their entire history. However, avoiding relegation this season will be one of Morecambe’s greatest ever challenges.

Since winning the League Two playoffs last season, The Shrimps have lost their manager, Derek Adams and also top goalscorer Carlos Mendes Gomes who scored the winner in the playoff final. Making use of striker Cole Stockton and midfielders Alfie McCalmont and Adam Phillips will be the key to success in League One. 17-year-old left-back Connor Pye has already established himself as a first-team player and is attracting interest from the Premier League.
