FM22 challenge, The Climb, will test your Football Manager tactical knowledge and skills throughout the journey.
The Climb challenge will take you on that beloved journey, but not just with one team. You will experience it with at least four different teams, highly likely more though. You will start in the EFL League Two with a team of your choice, where you can make the start as easy or as hard as you would like.
- Easy – Salford
- Medium – Bradford City
- Hard – Scunthorpe
Rules of The Climb
1. You must get promoted from every league up to the Premier League, whether by automatic promotion or via the play-offs.
2. You cannot manage in the league above until you have been promoted from the league below it. For example, if you are currently Salford manager and you are fighting for the league title in League Two and Bolton in League One approached you for their vacant managerial position, you would not be able to take it. You must stay in the league until you have gained promotion from it, then you can progress.
3. Once you have been promoted to the league above, you can’t then get promoted again with the team you managed and got promoted with in the league below. You must secure a job with a new team in the league to get promoted with. If no jobs become available or you are not successful with applications, but you then get promoted with the same team, you must resign immediately and continue looking for a role in the league you need to gain promotion from.
4. If an ex-club approaches you, you cannot take the role.
Challenge Summary
The overall aim of the challenge is to get promoted from each league and eventually win the Premier League title but in a more tense and interesting journeyman type of challenge than a one-club save. During the save, you will have to work with different club visions, different board members and staff, varied transfer budgets, but most of all, you will have to start afresh with each team you take over with new players at your disposal. You may even have some players who follow you from team to team and up the English league system.
The Climb forces you to try out new tactics with each team you move to. One team may have woeful strikers, so you have to play a strikerless system. The next might have very strong centre backs meaning playing five at the back is your best option. It tests your Football Manager tactical knowledge and skills throughout the journey.
Making it harder
Looking to make the challenge harder and really test your Football Manager skills, you could think about adding any of these extra rules into the challenge:
1. Start from the National League North or South, rather than the EFL League 2.
2. The only way you can progress to the league above is if you win the league. 2nd place and play-off promotion do not count. So, if you get promoted via 2nd spot, time to resign and back down to the league you just got promoted from and attempt to win the league again with a different team.
3. Only sign UK & Irish players. This may be an easy rule to stick to in the lower leagues, but once you start hitting the higher spots in the EFL Championship and Premier League, it will make improving the squad a lot harder.
This is an FM22 challenge that you can take to any other National league too, so if you are bored of managing in England, why not try it out in Germany and start in the 3. Liga working your way up to be Bundesliga champions. The world is your oyster, literally.
