Football Manager 2022 Atletico Madrid tactic and team guide. Club culture
and board requirements, tactics, key players, youth prospects and potential
transfers in FM22.
Here is a brief analysis of the Atletico Madrid squad, their club structure, relationship any potential managers will have with the board, expectations and possible tactics any FM 22 manager can use.
About Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid or Atletico are a professional football club that ply their trade in the La Liga. Atletico are the defending La Liga Champions and are the third most successful club in Spanish football – behind Real Madrid and Barcelona.
As the La Liga champions. Atletico are in the UEFA Champions League and you will be replacing a very successful manager in Diego Simeone, the board requirements should be;
⦁ Challenge for the La Liga title.
⦁ Make the QF of the UEFA Champion’s League
⦁ Work towards becoming self-sustainable
There will be no particular demands from the board in terms of how you want to play as long as you achieve the results. However, the club will ask you to strictly adhere to the wage budget and sign players who can later be sold for a profit.
Atletico Madrid have excellent training facilities and a capable youth system. However, you will need to work on improving these after you stabilize your position at the club.
Squad, Formation and Tactical Style
Atletico are a team that generally like to play on the counter. They like playing a fast tempo game and release their wide midfielders into attacking positions. They are also a team that puts a lot of weight on set pieces, especially corners. So a Fluid counter-attacking style of football is best suited to go with their strengths.
A 4-2-3-1 is the best formation to go with for Atletico considering their players.
A rough example of what your line-up would look like in a 4-2-3-1 formation is as follows;
Jan Oblak as a sweeper keeper.
Jose Gimenez & Felipe as the 2 centre backs with Gimenez being played as a ball-playing centre back.
Kieran Trippier & Renan Lodi as fullback and wingback respectively. Increased crossing instructions to take advantage of Trippier’s naturally high crossing stats is recommended.
Koke as a deep-lying playmaker in defence duty and Marcos Llorente as a box to box midfielder.
Joao Felix operates as either a Shadow Striker or an Attacking midfielder.
Yannick Carrasco & Antoine Griezmann as the 2 wingers, the former playing as an inverted winger and Griezmann as an inside forward
Luis Suarez as either an Advanced Forward or a Deep lying forward.
Alternatively, you can go with a 4-1-2-1-2 diamond with Lemar operating as an advanced midfielder and moving Koke to a wider midfielder role. There are other good rotational options from the bench like Kondogbia, Rodrigo De Paul & Correa so the squad is quite versatile in terms of formations.
Marcos Llorente
The former Real Madrid man has reinvented himself at Atletico and his goals from midfield were crucial for a successful season for Atletico in 2020-2021.
Koke
Koke is the club captain and is a versatile midfielder who can play multiple positions. His vision and set-piece ability make him a crucial part of the Atletico lineup.
Jan Oblak has one of the highest save percentage amongst all keepers and is amongst the best goalkeepers in the world. His form and fitness will be crucial towards securing favourable results with Atletico.
Antoine Griezmann
The mercurial forward is back at the club after a couple of sub-par seasons at Barcelona. Griezmann is still amongst the best player in the game and is an amazing addition to the Atletico squad.
Youth Prospects
There are a few exciting young prospects in the ranks who have the potential to be some of the best players in the league. A few examples are,
Joao Felix
Felix may have taken his time to settle at Atletico but he remains one of the best wonderkids in the game and will develop into a world-class star in most FM22 saves.
Matheus Cunha
The young Brazilian forward joined Atletico after enjoying some success at Hertha and can be a big player for the club in the future.
Weaknesses
• The quality of backups in the squad may not be up to the quality and could prove fatal if your squad is affected by injuries.
• You run the risk of some talents being poached by other clubs, especially in search of higher wages.
• Some key players are ageing and with the budget quite low it is not easy to find able replacements.
Potential Transfers (in)
With Atletico having problems with their bench you definitely need to bolster the quality of the squad to compete especially with the giants of Europe.
⦁ Edinson Cavani
⦁ Antonio Rudiger
Potential Transfers (Out)
These players may be surplus to requirements at the club or may not be of the expected quality.
⦁ Stefan Savic
⦁ Hector Herrera
Summary
Atletico Madrid are a very exciting club to manage for many FM Managers, especially in the FM22 edition. WIth the financial difficulty for the 2 Spanish giants, Atletico are the favourites for the La Liga title right now and FM managers have the possibility to make Atletico the dominant club from Spain.
