About Wolverhampton
Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club, known as Wolves, is a professional association football club based in the city of Wolverhampton in the West Midlands, England. Formed as St. Luke’s F.C. in 1877, the club has played at Molineux Stadium since 1889 and has been competing in the Premier League, the top division of English football, since winning promotion in 2018. The 2021–22 season is the club’s 67th season in total at the highest level.
Wolves had an up and down 2020-2021 season and finished 13th in the league. The board requirements once you take over will be;
· Finish in the top half of the Premier League.
· Reach the 5th round of the FA Cup.
· Reach the 4th round of the EFL Carabao Cup.
Additionally, you will be required to sign high reputation players, a special preference for Portuguese players, and play entertaining football and use the club’s youth system to develop players for the future.
The club have very good training facilities and a decent youth set-up. The club, however, has a very efficient scouting set-up with the focus on young versatile players. You can make use of this aspect to bolster your squad.
Squad, Formation and Tactical Style
Wolves have developed a specific play style under Nuno and, more recently, Bruno Lage, so it will be wise to follow what they built. A wing play or a counter-attacking style of play is what suits Wolves the best.
Wolves are one of the few teams that have season regular success with a 3 at the back formation, so it would be best if you want to follow the same. A 3-5-2 or a 3-4-3 is the best-suited formation for the players available.
A rough example of what your line-up would look like in a 3-4-3 formation is as follows;
Jose Sa as a sweeper-keeper.
Willy Boly, Conor Coady & Roman Saiss as the 3 centre backs. You can use Coady as a Ball playing defender with Boly and Saiss being played as wide centre backs.
Nelson Semedo & Jonny Otto as the wing-backs, you can increase crossing instructions for Jonny and have Semedo move into advanced attacking positions during attacks.
Joao Moutinho & Ruben Neves as the 2 central midfielders, with one playing as a playmaker and the other playing as a box to box midfielder.
Pedro Neto & Adama Traore as the 2 wide players, with both playing as wingers.
Raul Jimenez plays upfront as a Pressing Forward.
There are decent options from the bench in the form of Hwang and Podence, and you can mix things around if there is a need for goals.
Raul Jimenez is a very underrated striker who is very consistent. He leads the line brilliantly for wolves. Although Jimenez recently suffered a bad head injury, his quality is there for all to see and will be a key player for Wolves.
Ruben Neves
The playmaker has a very mature head on his shoulders and can provide key assists and goals from midfield.
Adama Traore
Traore is a bundle of pace from the wings and is one of the most difficult players to mark in the game. His enterprise and ability to beat his man can be a big positive in tough games.
Youth Prospects
Pedro Neto
Neto is already a vital member of the Wolves squad and is an extremely versatile winger. He is very quick on his feet and is an excellent dribbler. Although he is recovering from a career-threatening injury, Neto is expected to be a big player for the club in the future.
Rayan Ait Nouri
Ait-Nouri has been heavily involved with the first team and can be amongst the best fullbacks in the league in the future.
Fabio Silva
Silva is a well-known name amongst FM Managers. He has been a wonderkid for several editions of the game and can develop into a beastly forward. Given time he can easily surpass Jimenez and can lead the line for Wolves.
