About Porto
FC Porto are a professional football team that ply their trade in the Primeira Liga. Along with Benfica & Sporting CP, Porto constitute the Big 3 in Portuguese football. The club have played every season in the Primeira League ever since the league’s inception in 1934. Porto are the second most decorated team in Portugal with a total of 78 major trophies which includes 29 Primera League titles.
Porto are also the most successful Portuguese club in European competitions having won 7 trophies including 2 UCL titles. Porto narrowly missed out on the Primeira title and finished runner-up to Sporting in the 2020-2021 season.
Porto are in the Champion’s League, the board requirements, once you take over, will be;
· Win the Portuguese Primeira Liga
· Reach the Quarterfinal of the UEFA Champion's League.
· Reach the final of the PT Cup.
· Develop the best youth system in the country.
Given that Porto are one of the top dogs in the Portuguese league, the board requirements are obviously pretty high. Additionally, you will be required to play attacking high tempo football, sign high reputation players, especially from rivals and develop players using the club’s excellent youth system.
Porto have one of the best youth recruitment’s in the game and produce world-class player season after season. They also have very good youth and training facilities that help players reach their potential.
Squad, Formation and Tactical Style
There are quite a few tactical setups you could deploy with Porto; however, the best-suited ones will be Tiki Taka/vertical tiki-taka. Although this is a much lower tempo tactic than what the board demands, it will ensure dominance in league games. You can also go with a gegenpress which will suit the players equally.
A 4-2-3-1 is the most stable formation for Porto. It will help you accommodate their stars in their preferred positions and also their attacking style of football.
A rough example of what your line-up would look like in a 4-2-3-1 formation is as follows;
Diogo Costa as a sweeper keeper.
Wendell & Chancel Mbemba as wing-backs. Wendell is especially attacking in nature and should be asked to go much more forward when possible.
Ivan Marcano & Pepe will make up the centre-back pairing, and both can be played as Ball playing defenders considering that they’re comfortable on the ball.
Mateus Uribe to be played as a deep playmaker on defence duty & Sergio Oliviera to be played as a carrilero or a Mezzala.
Otavio Da Silva as an Attacking Midfielder will pop up with some crucial goals in important matches
Luis Diaz on the left wing as an inverted winger & Jesus Corona on the right as an inverted winger.
Mahedi Taremi as an advanced forward.
The Colombian international is one of the best players at the club and is extremely hard to handle on the wings.
Otavio
Otavio has been with Porto since 2014 and is now one of the most important players at the club. His contributions to the attack are crucial for the success of Porto.
The Mexican international is considered one of the best players at the club. He is ambipedal and extremely versatile. His trickery and pace from the wings will be crucial in securing important results.
Pepe
Although 38, Pepe is still one of the most important players for Porto. His experience is vital in organizing the defence, and he can be an excellent mentor to the young players that come from the youth setup.
Youth Prospects
There are a few exciting young prospects in the ranks who have the potential to be some of the best players in the league. A few examples are,
Romario Baro
Baro is currently out on loan and can be one of the best players to play for Porto if nurtured correctly.
Vitinha
Another top prospect to rise from the Porto academy, Vitinha, is expected to be a superstar for Portugal in the future.
Francisco Conceicao
The 18-year-old winger is said to be an individual with very high potential and, with game time and mentorship, could be an important player for club and country in the future.
