Trying to find a new long-term save in FM23? Then try out one of the following clubs. These are in need of rebuilding but promise rewards if you commit.
FC Schalke 04
As one of German football's traditional giants, the Royal Blues of Gelsenkirchen have fallen on hard times. Having just been promoted back to the Bundesliga, they need a squad overall and lack anything like the players of their heyday, even a decade ago.
You will have your work cut out for you to turn Schalke around. Money is tight, and there is precious little opportunity to build something with money alone. Development, patience, and a whole lot of luck will be needed. Your saving grace is world-class support and an academy that can put many other clubs in Europe to shame. The challenge is great, and fanbase expectations are huge: can you live up to the challenge of restoring German footballs third power?
Palermo
Now owned by the City Football Group, Palermo would make a very interesting team to manage indeed. They are seen as one of the most beloved in Italian football, a club of real style and grandeur. However, as you might have heard, they went through hard time financially and essentially went bust. Now moving ever-close to a return to the ‘big time’ again, Palermo could be a highly enjoyable save.
They have a bit more money than previous years, and still retain one of the most energetic and wonderful supports in Italian football. Definitely a challenge, with expectations of promotion pretty sharpish, but they are definitely a club that you could enjoy working with.
While you have access to some funds, you are by no means the richest club in Italy; the full force of the CFG is not backing you here. Still, there is ample opportunity to really build something worthwhile here.
Partizan Belgrade
As one of the ‘big two’ of the Serbian football world, Partizan Belgrade are a historical club with real prominence in the game. However, like many other clubs in the Balkans, they have been left behind by the modernisation of football. If you can put yourself in a position to win the league, though, which will be more or less demanded each year, you could easily build something special in Belgrade.
Financially stricken and with only a few players you might have heard of (Lazar Markovic!), you could enjoy a challenge here for sure. The patience is paper thin, as is the budget, so you will need to get the most out of what you have whilst using your prolific academy to your advantage. If you want to manage a genuinely interesting club with a history in Europe, though, taking over Partizan could be your next step.
Hajduk Split
Another big club from a former Yugoslavian country, Hajduk are the ‘other’ giant of Croatian football. Eternal rivals Dinamo Zagreb have left you in the dust, though, and even the likes of Rijeka and Osijek are having some success in the modern era. Your job is simple: win the league!
This is not easy, and you will have no shortage of challenges waiting you as you try and take on this most intriguing of league clubs. It is a fun experience, and one that should be something you relish if you are a lover of a true challenge.
Like Partizan, your rival is ahead of you completely, and you lack the resources to do anything about it. You need to be box clever, be tactically versatile, and know when to sell players to help fund the next round of signings. A challenge indeed, but one you should relish!
AEK Athens
Although they might be the third power of Greek football traditionally, today, they are closer to fourth spot. Olympiakos, Panathinaikos and PAOK are all ahead of you, and you have very little money to play with. What you do have is a fervent support and a list of former Greek players who you might recognise.
Greek football is a dynamic, competitive place, but it is also a financially weakened part of the world. If you want to try and rebuild AEK, you are going to be doing so by being smart with your money. You need to know when to move for players, when to wait, and when to be patient. There is precious little room for errors here, either, as you need to really focus on achieving domestic success while having your squad more or less sold out from you at the start of each window. If you like a challenge, you will find one waiting for you in Athens!
Bohemians
Head over to Czech football and you could have a real challenge on your hands. Bohemians are seen as among the most beloved clubs in the country, with a wonderful support, but a tiny trophy cabinet and a long period of barren success. If you want to achieve something here, you will need to be very intelligent about how you go about squad building.
Time is precious at Bohemians, and sadly you will not get too much. The fans are desperate for success, and you will have very little money to play with. They do, though, have a decent squad of former Czech internationals and a few good young players. Definitely a team that you could enjoy managing if you fancy a more out there challenge in rebuilding a club that has enjoyed sporadic but still-significant success.
So, out of the above clubs to rebuild, where can you see yourself getting the most enjoyable challenge?
