The old adage in football is that if a player is not signed by the August deadline, there is a reason. While this might be true most of the time, there are always outliers and exceptions to the rule. With that in mind, you might want to keep an eye on the following FM23 free agents.

Each provides a highly exciting-looking player, someone who you could build around for years to come. Who, though, are likely to provide you with the kind of bargain returns you are hoping for when you snap up a signing for no fee?

 

1. Fábio Martins

Fabio Martins is a player who was once tipped for genuine greatness, an FC Porto academy graduate of some repute. However, his career has been one of unfilled promise. He has, though, played for teams like Sporting Braga, so there is a player in there. At 29, he is not going to get much better, and he was hanging around the Middle East most recently.

He does, though, have pace and a bit of guile. If your team is short on funds and needs a decent attacking option on either wing, then Martins might be worth adding to your shortlist of potential free-agent signings.

 

2. Edgar Ié

Athletic centre-halves who have good technical quality are usually signed by teams. Having most recently played for, and won the league with, Trabzonspor, you are getting a good player. He is still looking for a team due to a rather sketchy injury record, but you do not play for teams like Barcelona, Villarreal, Lille, and Trabzon if you are a poor player.

He has good physical qualities, isn’t useless on the ball, and has decent enough reading of the game. At 28, he is in his prime years and could become a very useful option.

3. Enock Kwateng

Kwateng is an intriguing player, a full-back with a hugely impressive engine. Though he has struggled at times in the past to really make an impact, he is only 25. He most recently played for Bordeaux, who were awful, but he would be a versatile option to bring off the bench.

At 25, he is a former France youth international who has clearly lost his way on the pitch in recent years. If you put him in a system that he can grow in, though, there is no reason why Kwateng could not be a useful hire for you – even as a short-term choice.

 

4. Zakaria Labyad

A playmaker who once held immense promise, Labyad is a bit of a journeyman. For teams who are in the ‘non-big five’ leagues, though, he would make a very astute signing. He has played for clubs like Ajax and Sporting CB, so there is an obvious level of talent in this player.

Labyad is someone that you should definitely keep an eye on if he is on the market. While he lacks physical quality and can be inconsistent, he has immense technical standards. In the right setup and with enough tactical leeway, he could be the creative spark you lack.

 

5. Simone Zaza

The big Italian might be more noted for his cringe-worthy penalty back in the day, but Simone Zaza is a good striker. He is a natural finisher, and while he has a tempestuous streak and a concerning injury record, he would be worth taking a chance on.

Just about any Serie A team outside of the big boys could find that Zaza offers them a reliable source of goals. If you can keep him fit and happy, which is easier said than done, Zaza is an asset. Definitely, a player that you should consider going for in the Italian top flight.
