About Liverpool
Liverpool are a club rich in history, with 19 league titles and 6 European cups. Liverpool are only 2nd in being the most successful club in England. Liverpool are one of the most widely supported clubs in world football. Under the leadership of Klopp, Liverpool have found a newfound stability and have been competing for several honours year on year.
Liverpool finished 2nd in the Premier League in the 2021-2022 season; the board expectations once you take over will be;
· A top 4 finish in the PL (Automatic Qualification to the UCL)
· Challenge for the UEFA Champions League
· Challenge for the FA cup
· Be competitive in the Carabao Cup
The club and supporters’ culture and expectations once you take over will be;
The club are also blessed with excellent training facilities and a superb youth setup that churns out league-ready players every season. Liverpool are also one of the loudest stadiums in England, and it should not be too difficult to make Anfield a fortress and a nightmare for away teams to visit.
Squad, Formation and Tactical Style
Liverpool have a pretty set and well-oiled first team and some able backups for most positions. However, will the recent sale of Sadio Mane, Liverpool do have an important position to fill, and it could take several transfer windows to get things perfect.
With Liverpool, you can probably continue using Klopp’s Gengenpress tactic. They have players with high work rate and the gegenpress will ensure that the ball is won high up the pitch itself. This is also a double-edged sword, with fatigue becoming a factor during a congested fixture list and also the chance for injuries to increase. You could alternatively deploy a simply vertical tiki taka which aims at retaining possession and creating a lot of chances.
A 4-3-3 DM or a 4-3-3 is, in my experience, the most reliable tactic for this Liverpool squad. You can alter how attacking or defensive your team lines up based on fixtures, but the trusted 433 always works for Liverpool. You can also opt for a 4-2-3-1 if you see fit.
A rough example of what your line-up would look like in a 4-3-3 formation is as follows;
Alison Becker as a sweeper keeper.
Trent Alexander Arnold & Andy Robertson as complete wing-backs/ wing-backs with increased crossing instructions.
Virgil Van Dijk as a ball-playing defender, and Joel Matip/Ibrahima Konate as the other ball-playing defender.
Fabinho to play as a defensive midfielder in a ball-winning midfielder or a regista role.
Thiago as a deep playmaker & Jordan Henderson as a box-to-box midfielder role.
Luis Diaz & Mohammad Salah on the left and right wings, respectively, operating as inside forwards.
Darwin Nunez as a lone forward in a Pressing Forward or a deep-lying forward role.
You can alternatively rotate players like Firmino or Jota, who are just as capable as some of the players in the starting XI.
Key Players
The entire first team is riddled with key players, but the pick of the lot are;
Virgil Van Dijk
Van Dijk is one of the best defenders in the game. He is also a massive threat from set pieces and a real leader for the team in defence.
Luis Diaz
Liverpool have seemingly found an instant replacement for Mane in Luis Diaz. The winger’s trickery and guile on the pitch is a crucial asset and he has the ability to create chances out of nothing.
Mohammad Salah
Mo Salah is one of the best players in the world in his position. Salah is extremely fast, tricky and lethal in front of the goal when presented with chances. His goal record for Liverpool is phenomenal, and under the right tactics, Salah can easily rule the Premier League with his performances.
Trent Alexander Arnold
Alexander Arnold is amongst the best-attacking wingbacks in the game. His prowess from set-piece situations and while crossing a football is second to none, and TAA will rake up assists for the club.
Youth Prospects
There are a lot of exciting young prospects in the ranks or on loan who have the potential to be some of the best players in the league. A few examples are,
Harvey Elliott
One of the most talented youngsters from the Liverpool academy, Elliott is also very versatile and can slot in multiple positions playing various roles. Elliot has seen a lot of game time this season in real life and can be developed into a top player for the club.
Fabio Carvalho
Carvalho is a new signing at the club and has the ability to become a top player for the club. His versatility also makes it easy for managers to fit him into most tactics.
Weaknesses
Liverpool, as such, have few weaknesses and will be a comparatively smoother ride for most managers unless they have horrible luck with injuries. However, some of their weaknesses are,
• The best tactic that suits Liverpool is the Gegenpress, but it is a double-edged sword, with injuries being a common occurrence. You will also have to rotate the squad more than normal because of fatigue.
• There is a massive drop in quality after the first team, especially in the attacking wingers' department, with no proper backups for Salah or Diaz.
Potential Transfers (in)
With Liverpool having problems with their bench you definitely need to bolster the quality of the squad to compete especially with the giants of Europe.
