Every manager is only as good as his backroom staff. Depending on how you play, some may be more dependent on their staff than others, but no matter how hands-on you are, eventually, you’ll need the advice of your coaches, assistant manager and your scouts. This article contains seven staff who I never start a save without.

Alistair Stevenson - Head of Youth Development

Almost everyone who plays FM loves to develop their own wonderkids. To do that, you need great facilities, and an even better Head of Youth Development to make the most of these facilities. Alistair Stevenson ticks all the necessary boxes for me. Not only does he have high working with youngsters, judging player potential and ability, but he also has respectable coaching attributes and great motivation, which are essential in cultivating talented players with good personalities. Starting the game at St Johnstone, and criminally underpaid for his ability, you’ll be able to tempt him away to a bigger club with relative ease.

Melanie Stewart - Physio

A good medical department is crucial to keeping your best players fit and on the pitch. Step forward, Melanie Stewart. Currently, at St Johnstone, Melanie has exceptional physiotherapy and sports science attributes. This makes her an exceptional addition to your medical department, as she can contribute to both disciplines at a high level and fits in at clubs of all levels.

Stephane Chapuisat - Coach

Currently, the chief scout at Young Boys, Stephane Chapuisat, has an eye for talent that seems wasted in your coaching staff - at first. However, his attacking coaching and technical coaching attributes make him well-placed to help develop your players, and that ability to judge ability and potential makes him a very handy deputy to keep around. Equally adept at scouting, it’s up to you where you choose to make use of him, but for my saves, I like to keep him around to advise on my playing squad.

Eric Gerets - Scout

When you look at Eric Gerets’ attributes, it’s hard not to think about what a great assistant manager he would be. A talented coach, and great player judgement attributes, he’d be the perfect right-hand man for any manager. There’s only one problem: he’s retired from hands-on roles such as coaching. The good news is, he’s still happy to take on recruitment roles like scouting and director of football. Combine his attributes with knowledge of a wide variety of countries, and you’ve got a fantastic asset to add to your scouting team. I personally prefer to take advantage of his knowledge of various African countries and send him to search for wonderkids in Western Africa before our competitors discover them.

Jose Boto - Director of Football

Jose Boto is a criminally underrated director of football. His eye for talent is phenomenal, and his knowledge of South American football is worth its weight in gold for European clubs trying to beat their competitors to the next Endrick. I’d like his negotiating to be higher, but as I take control of all contract negotiations, this isn’t a problem to me and means I can still sign my favourite Director of Football in every save. Pick him up from PAOK Salonika for very reasonable wages - compared to others with the same attributes - and let him go to work.

Andreas Fehse - Scout

Much like my reasons for signing Eric Gerets, Andreas Fehse has a great combination of favourable attributes and knowledge of nations that produce great talent. Pick him up from Rangers for a very reasonable wage, and send him to Germany; Austria; Switzerland or Poland and watch as his recommendations come rolling in. Knowledge of this part of Europe is crucial to long-term success in any FM save, and means you’ve got your eye on the talent coming out of some of the most successful youth academies in the world.

Alessandro Nista - GK Coach

Goalkeeping coaching is an area rich with talent in FM, but Nista stands out to me as an exceptional candidate. With high attributes in coaching shot-stopping, handling and distribution, signing Nista at the beginning of your save gives you a great all-rounder who can fill any goalkeeping coaching role you need. As a 4.5-star coach who only has a continental B license, there’s further room for him to grow as you convince your board to pay for his coaching badges.
