No matter your tactical style, a great goalkeeper is crucial to success on Football Manager. When the game is on the line, and you need someone to stand tall in the biggest moments, your goalkeeper is your last line of defence, and you need someone you can rely on between the sticks. Elite level goalkeeping can help to mask your defence’s shortcomings, especially when facing the toughest competition in the game. This article will list goalkeepers suitable for clubs at all levels. I’ve divided goalkeepers into leagues in the English football pyramid, but obviously these can be translated to leagues in other countries.

Premier League

Diogo Costa (£65m release clause)

A highly-rated shot-stopper from Porto, Costa has been a hot property on FM for a number of years. At the age of 23, he’s about to enter his prime, and he’s already one of the top 15 goalkeepers in the game. He’s a well-rounded keeper with excellent distribution, and he’ll inevitably become one of the best goalkeepers in the world. That level of talent doesn’t come cheaply, though, and his £75m release clause makes him unaffordable for all but the very biggest clubs. But, if you can prise him from Porto’s grasp, you’ll be glad you did.

Lucas Perri (Est. value £8m)

Brazil has turned out some of the best goalkeepers in the world at the moment. Ederson and Alisson battle for the national side’s number 1 jersey, but their successor is waiting in the wings already. Lucas Perri is currently forging his career at Botafogo, but he’s more than ready for a move to Europe. He’ll suit a lower- to mid-table Premier League side, but his potential will lead to him being a top-10 keeper in the world. He’s very reasonable for his potential as well; you should be able to take him away from Botafogo for under £10m.

Championship

Kacper Tobiasz (Est. £3m)

Are you trying to take the second-flight by storm with your dazzling passing game? Do you need a keeper comfortable in possession? Then look no further than Legia Warsaw’s finest. If you can find a keeper this comfortable on the ball outside of Europe’s top 5 leagues, I’ll be amazed. He’s very comfortable with the sweeper part of sweeper keeper, and he’s a decent enough shot-stopper for his age. Get him in early, and his value will soar.

Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro (Est. £11m)

He won’t come cheap, so he might be best for a loan to a Championship side with an option to buy after promotion, but Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro has been a high potential option for a number of years now. Very highly rated, he’s a wonderfully well-rounded keeper and he’s been one of my favourite players since FM22.

League One

Lino Kasten (Est. £25k)

Yes, you read that right. £25k is all it should take to separate Lino Kasten from Altglienicke, and it’ll be more than worth your time if you can convince him to come to a third tier side. He’ll walk into any side in League One, he’s only 22, and he’ll only get better. His potential looks like he’ll be a low-end Premier League keeper one day, so buy low and sell high with this fantastic prospect.

Robby McCrory (Est. £300k)

McCrory was touted as a future Scotland number 1 as a youngster. While he hasn’t quite reached that potential yet, 25 is young for a goalkeeper, and regular football would go a long way to helping him realise this potential. He’ll cost a fair penny for this level, but he should be one of the very best in the division, and should reach upper-Championship level when it’s all said and done, and he’ll outgrow that pricetag pretty comfortably once his international career really kicks off.

League Two

Kristoffer Klaesson (Est. £11m)

That’s not the pricetag you’ll be looking at when you’re down this low, but when it comes to loan targets, Klaesson is a very achievable target. Currently, at Leeds, he’ll need football to aid his development, and you need a keeper for a promotion battle. Win-win. His shot-stopping would be unrivalled in League Two, so if you can convince him to join you on loan, you’ll have the safety net your defence deserves.

Carlos Kameni (Free Agent)

Here’s a signing that’ll show my age. Carlos Kameni has been an FM favourite for a very long time, and for your League Two side, he can be a favourite again. He’s a veteran goalkeeper, 39 years of age, but he’s got some good football left in him. While he’s only a short-term option, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better keeper for this level - and you just might find his experience and leadership invaluable in the dressing room.
