FM22 article series on which teams to manage in the game, this time it's
Arsenal.
What is Arsenal’s history?
Inertia set in under Wenger, and you are taking over a club with massive costs, wages, and expectations but not really any way of getting to where the club wants to be. They last won the league title in 2004, and though they have won some FA Cup titles in the years since. European success has evaded the Gunners since the 1990s when they won the UEFA Cup Winners Cup.
What is Arsenal’s objectives and finances?
Your first objective is to get back into the UEFA Champions League, which you will be expected to do in your first season. In a 3-5 year spell, you are expected to restore the Gunners to the top of the football table and also play good, attacking football that makes use of your squad depth. You will not be in Europe this year, so you have plenty of time to focus on building a team for each weekend which you could then use to your advantage.
The only problem is that you have very little to spend compared to the likes of Chelsea and the Manchester clubs. Huge funds are tied up in ill-suited players to the top level of football, meaning you need to box clever and empty your squad of some pretty considerable bloat all the while removing problem players.
You have some real talent, but a lot of wasted resources going to players who will struggle to make your squad. Balancing this out in the first season is going to be your biggest challenge at Arsenal.
Who are the best players at Arsenal?
Your key players include the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, your highly paid captain with a short temper, and the equally aggressive Granit Xhaka. Sadly, most other positions are either filled by highly expensive failures (at least under other managers), and a rather whimsical selection of overpaid journeymen. You will need to get about emptying your squad, though many are out of contract by 2024.
Your best players list is limited, but they have incredible talent and can be built around as the key face of a new Arsenal dynasty. Can you manage it?
